Evidently two kids in his class have cell phones, so Thomas has been bothering us to buy him one. We keep telling him that he’s not old enough to have one, but he is relentless. At one point, I pointed out that he hardly used the phone at home and asked for what would he need a cell phone.
Recently I was in his room fixing a computer problem he was having. As I waited for the computer to reboot, I looked around his room and my eyes fell on a piece of paper with a list: “Reasons to have a cell phone.” He had the list pre-numbered to ten but had not thought of ten reasons yet. I don’t remember any of the other entries, but the last one caught my eye:
- 7. Kidnapped!
If you have Verizon, they have a new phone specifically for kids called the Migo or something like that. It looks like a kids phone and can only be programmed in with four numbers – it has big numbers 1-4 on it instead of a normal keypad.
I just gave in and got Adam (14) a phone for Christmas. He’s one of the last in his grade, 8th grade, to get one. He said when the fifth graders came to school to shadow 6th graders he saw a couple with cell phones. I’m thinking, what?? I can’t imagine why a 5th grader would need a cell phone!
Ridiculous for a kid to have a phone in school! If they need to call for a ride home, that’s what the office phone is for! I will not buy my 8th grader a cell phone, no matter how much he begs. Besides, his school does not allow cell phones. Hang tough, Mick!
Give me ONE good reason…..
i spent the majority of the day carving out my flaming butterflies. I have to have it done by my next class. I actually enjoyed it. I like fine detail and this is full of fine detail. My teacher warned…
