Peeping from behind every window pane

I find myself in Foster City once again at EFI headquarters. I’ve been moved to another team again so I’m here familiarizing myself with the tool set and meeting the other team members. I’ll be here until Friday night.

Working from home has been better than I expected. Even though I’ve been very busy, I get to choose the times when I work and the times that I don’t. That means when I feel like doing a couple of hours in the evening, it’s no big deal. Or if I have to run some errand in the afternoon. So far I feel like I’ve been pretty productive and my new office feels like a cockpit controlling my working world and it has to do with the decoration I put on it, including windows with motorized blinds so I can control it from everywhere I’m with my phone. I’m sure I’ll write more on this later. I bought Hunter Douglas honeycomb shades and saved a ton of money on my electric bill right away.

At the beginning of the month I got bad news about my mom’s brother, Lorell. He’s been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and the prognosis is dire. Lorell and I share the same birthday (albeit 39 years apart) so I always think of him on my birthday. Lorell married my father’s sister, so we always spent lots of time at their house when I was a kid. In fact, some of my best memories are from time spent on their farm. This year I’m going to drop in on his birthday party in Iowa on the last Saturday of September (the weekend after our birthday). It’s only going to be for a few days but it’s going to be good to see him and his family.

Because of my little mini-vacation, we had to move my annual 40th Birthday Party to the first weekend in October. Two years ago we had the first 40th Birthday Party and it turned out so well that we decided to make it an annual event. If you are reading this, consider this your invitation. It starts at 5:00 on Saturday and continues until we politely ask you to leave. Email me if you need directions to our house.

  1. Looking forward to seeing you next weekend, wished it could be under better circumstances but it’s great that you’re coming “home”. Should be a good time and I know grandpa (and the rest of the family) will enjoy seeing you too.

  2. Ditto for me! Some of my best childhood memories are also from time spent on Lorell’s farm. Remember the gravity wagons? What fun!!

  3. I loved the wagons & the grain trucks and I remember my dog rat hunting at one time too. Good memories. I remember when he gave me my first horse, a Shetland pony for Christmas, Dusty. That was the best present ever.
