What American accent do you have?Â
Your Result: The Inland North
You may think you speak “Standard English straight out of the dictionary” but when you step away from the Great Lakes you get asked annoying questions like “Are you from Wisconsin?” or “Are you from Chicago?” Chances are you call carbonated drinks “pop.” |

For the record, I stopped saying “pop” when I was a teenager in order to differentiate myself from the masses. I say “soda”.
Impressive:
“Judging by how you talk you are probably from north Jersey, New York City, Connecticut or Rhode Island. Chances are, if you are from New York City (and not those other places) people would probably be able to tell if they actually heard you speak.”
I doubt most people could tell just by hearing me, but NY (Long Island, not the city) is in fact where I grew up (0-13 yrs).
Chris:
As I told you earlier, you have no discernible accent to me. I wonder what a Portland/Northwest accents sounds like.
ha!
“You have a Midland accent” is just another way of saying “you don’t have an accent.” You probably are from the Midland (Pennsylvania, southern Ohio, southern Indiana, southern Illinois, and Missouri) but then for all we know you could be from Florida or Charleston or one of those big southern cities like Atlanta or Dallas. You have a good voice for TV and radio.
Mardy:
I think you answered the questions according to how you THINK you say things. 🙂
So, you don’t think I have a non-accent. I said the words out loud as I went thru the quiz… 🙂
I’d say you have bad ears then!
Seriously, though, it’s pretty remarkable they picked out two of your former hometowns.
It basically said the same thing for me and I’ve been told around here that I have a heavy Minnesota accent, I’ve never noticed it before and I haven’t lived in Minnesota since ’78 but since they told me about it I can definitely hear it, especially when I say things like Wisconsin, South Dakota, etc. I guess I don’t mind having an accent though.
Your MN accent is not as noticeable as your mom’s. Also, there are many people from northern Iowa (and I don’t mean Cedar Falls) who have what most people call “Minnesota accents.” Cindy has a pretty heavy MN accent, for example.
All in my opinion, of course.
Thanks. I think its more noticeable around here since we’re further from Minnesota. I guess I never noticed mom or Cindy’s accents. Guess I’ll have to pay more attention to that this weekend. 🙂
