In all the hub-bub over my departure from CPS, I missed this press release announcing the update to Safe Eyes that I worked on last year. I wrote the code for all of the new features and really enjoyed working with the people at InternetSafety.com. It’s a great product and provided a welcome respite from the difficult political machinations that went on at CPS during that time.
One of the things I do in my profession is to design user interfaces for software. Most people probably don’t give much thought to how buttons, windows, menus and other elements come together to make your software experience understandable and enjoyable, but software professionals spend alot of time figuring those things out. Today a collegue sent me an excellent article called Visualizing Fitts’ Law, which describes a basic principle for deciding where user interface elements are placed on the screen and how big they should be. Although most of them probably don’t know it, one of the reasons that Mac people hate Windows is because the placement of menus doesn’t take advantage of infinite width.

Unsanity has an excellent article about the pre-binding phase of software installation and how it can really cause you grief if you’re not careful. It’s required reading for any Mac OS X user.
Today was the first day of WWDC. WWDC consists mostly of lecture sessions about the technologies in Mac OS X and how to use those technologies. The most exciting session of the week is the first: the legendary keynote by Apple CEO Steve Jobs. This is when Steve unveils all the great new stuff that they’ll be doing during the next year. This year’s keynote was as good as any I’ve attended.
The most anticipated news was the introduction of the Mac Pro line of desktop computers. This was the final step towards an all-Intel line for Apple and all evidence indicates that they saved the best for last. These machines will feature:
But this was just the start of the goodies that Apple introduced. Next spring they plan to ship the next version of Mac OS X, code-named Leopard, and it is packed full of great new features:
Leopard is shipping next spring but we got a “Preview” copy for free today. Everyone was madly installing it on their laptops during lunch. Nerds are so funny!

McCartney Trivia: Ringo “quit” the Beatles for two weeks during the making of the White Album. While Ringo mulled his future on Peter Sellers’ yacht, the other Beatles continued recording “Back in the USSR” and “Dear Prudence” with Paul on drums. When Ringo returned, he found his drum kit wreathed in flowers with a large “Welcome Back” sign.

Did anybody else see the ice dancing fallathon the other night. I totally dug it when the Italians faced off at center ice and just stared each other down for 20 seconds. She was pissed! Unfortunately, the Canadian couple had to withdraw because her injury was too severe. You can read all about it in this search of Google News for “ice dancing”.
